It is one of the rites of passage for a new parent. Whether or not your baby is breastfed initially, there will always be times that it is not practical to feed that way, and when a bottle will be necessary. That is not the difficult part, although it is fair to say that some babies do not exactly take to the bottle with the same gusto that others do. The really tricky part is ensuring that the bottle is at the right temperature. Your baby will have become used to a certain level of temperature from it’s mother’s milk, and drinking from a bottle needs to replicate that experience as closely as possible.
The problem is, how do you get a bottle to the ideal temperature? For a while, it was recommended that mothers try putting the bottle in the microwave to heat it quickly to a warmish temperature. This is not a good idea, as sometimes microwaves warm one part of the bottle more than others, creating some formula that is almost boiling hot and some which is barely warm. You are best using a jug of hot water – out of your baby’s reach and eye line – or better yet, a baby bottle warmer.
The major advantage of a baby bottle warmer is that you can leave the bottle in there and it will be kept cool until it needs to be warmed. At a certain, programmed point, the milk will be heated – at which point you test it to make sure – and drinkable for your baby. A baby bottle warmer is always a sound investment.
